French motorway tolls are straightforward compared to Portugal's invisible gantry system. You drive to a booth, pay, and continue. There are no cameras-only sections that fine you weeks later for a road you didn't know was tolled — with one exception covered below.
That said, French tolls add up quickly on a long drive south. Understanding the costs and payment options before you go makes the journey smoother.
How French toll booths work
French motorway toll plazas (péages) are hard to miss — large overhead gantries with lanes separated by type. As you approach, choose your lane based on how you want to pay:
Card lanes
Unmanned or manned lanes accepting Visa and Mastercard. Insert your card, the barrier lifts. Most UK cards work without issue — contactless is increasingly available.
Cash lanes
Accept coins and notes. Some lanes are coin-only and give change automatically. Manned cash lanes are becoming rarer — always have a card as backup.
Télépéage (t) lanes
For transponder holders only — no stopping required, barrier lifts automatically. Marked with an orange "t" sign. Do not enter these lanes without a transponder.
Do not enter a télépéage-only lane without a transponder. The barrier will not lift and you will have to reverse out, which is dangerous and causes delays.
Does my UK card work at French toll booths?
Yes — UK Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards work at virtually all French toll booths. Contactless is available at an increasing number of booths, though chip-and-PIN remains the most reliable method.
American Express is not widely accepted at toll booths. If you only carry Amex, bring cash or a Visa/Mastercard as backup.
Some automated unmanned lanes are card-only. If you have no card, look for a lane with a green "CB" or "Visa" symbol, or a manned cabin.
How much do French tolls cost?
Costs depend on your vehicle class and the route. Cars (class 1) pay the base rate; vans and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay significantly more. Toll tariffs are updated annually by each motorway operator, so rather than publish figures that may be out of date, we recommend calculating your exact route cost before you travel.

The one exception: tunnel and bridge tolls
A small number of tunnels and bridges in France charge their own tolls, separate from motorway péages. The most relevant for UK drivers heading south:
Millau Viaduct (A75)

Mont Blanc Tunnel

Should I get a transponder?
For a single trip, no — paying by card at each booth is perfectly fine. For drivers who make multiple trips per year, a télépéage transponder lets you use the faster unmanned lanes without stopping.
UK drivers can use a télépéage transponder that works across French, Spanish, and Portuguese motorways. Check current options and pricing at autoroutes.fr — transponder availability and fees change regularly so it is worth checking before your trip.
Note: Unlike Portugal, you will not be fined for driving on a French motorway without a transponder. Card and cash payment at the booth is always available as an alternative.
