Lyon is the low emission zone most UK drivers underestimate. It doesn't have Paris's reputation, but it now runs around the clock, covers the motorway corridor you'd normally use to bypass the city, and — as of summer 2026 — is actually issuing fines rather than warning letters. What Does Lyon's ZFE Actually Cover?
Lyon's zone is a single perimeter, simpler on paper than Paris's two overlapping zones — but the boundary itself catches people out, because the motorway you'd expect to use as a bypass is now part of it.

The city of Lyon itself, plus Caluire-et-Cuire and the parts of Villeurbanne, Bron and Vénissieux that sit inside the Laurent Bonnevay ring road.

Paris and Bordeaux both restrict weekdays only; Lyon's ZFE applies every hour of every day, including weekends and public holidays.
Which Vehicles Are Banned in Lyon in 2026?
Since 1 January 2025, only the following vehicles are permitted inside the zone:

Local resident exemptions exist — don't rely on them as a visitor
Lyon Métropole offers a "small driver" derogation (up to 52 days a year for Crit'Air 3+ vehicles) and a low-income exemption introduced in September 2025.
Both are aimed at French residents registering through the local system — as a UK visitor you should not assume either applies to you, and should check current rules before travelling if in doubt.

This is the single most important difference from Paris, and it catches out drivers who assume Lyon works the same way.
No — the M6/M7 corridor is NOT exempt.
The motorway was excluded from Lyon's ZFE when the zone first launched, but the perimeter was extended on 1 January 2024 to bring the M6/M7 and the ring roads (BPNL and Laurent Bonnevay) inside the zone. Driving straight through on the motorway now requires a valid Crit'Air sticker, the same as entering the city centre.
Don't confuse this with Paris.
On the Paris guide we explain that the A86 motorway itself stays outside the Greater Paris ZFE, so transiting Paris on the A86 without stopping doesn't require a sticker. Lyon does not offer the same exemption — its boundary motorway is inside the restricted zone, not outside it.
If your route takes you through Lyon on the M6/M7, treat it exactly like driving into the city centre — you need a compliant sticker.
What Are the Fines?
Driving in the Lyon ZFE without a valid sticker results in:
- €68 for cars and light commercial vehicles
- €135 for vans, heavy vehicles and coaches
The ban itself has applied since 1 January 2025, but for the first eighteen months most drivers caught without a valid sticker received an educational warning letter rather than a fine. That changed on 1 July 2026, when Lyon Métropole began issuing real fines systematically.
Automated number-plate recognition cameras are being rolled out through the second half of 2026 to make enforcement continuous — until then, expect a mix of camera and manual police checks. Either way, fines are posted to the vehicle's registered address, so UK drivers are not exempt.
Because the restriction is 24/7, there's no "safe" time of day to drive through Lyon without a sticker.
How Lyon's ZFE Differs From Paris
Hours: Lyon is 24/7. Paris is Monday–Friday, 8am–8pm only.
Zone structure: Lyon is one zone. Paris has two overlapping zones (City of Paris and Greater Paris).
Boundary motorway: Lyon's M6/M7 is inside the zone. Paris's A86 stays outside it.
Banned categories: Both ban Crit'Air 3, 4 and 5 (Paris has a Crit'Air 3 grace period to end of December 2026, aimed at residents; Lyon has no equivalent grace period).

Do I need a Crit'Air sticker to drive through Lyon on the motorway?

Lyon is one zone with one boundary, while Paris has two overlapping zones. And Lyon's boundary motorways (M6/M7) are inside the zone, while Paris's boundary motorway (the A86) is exempt.
