How I Saved €80 on Fuel Driving Through France (Google Maps Trick + Strategic Fill-Ups)

Last month, driving from UK to Spain (and back), we saved over €80 on fuel.

Not by driving slowly. Not by hypermiling. Not by some magic fuel additive.

By spending 10 minutes off the motorway at cheap supermarket fuel stations.

When we filled up in Spain: €1.22 per litre.
When we saw French motorway prices: €2.05 per litre.

That's a 68% markup.

But here's the thing: You don't have to pay motorway prices. And finding cheaper fuel is stupidly simple.

Let me show you exactly what we did.

The Shocking Price Differences

How Much More Expensive Is French Motorway Fuel?

Real prices from our December trip:

LocationPrice per Litre70L Fill CostDifference
Galicia, Spain€1.22€85.40Baseline
French off-motorway (Leclerc)€1.44€100.80+18%
French motorway services€2.05€143.50+68%

For a 70L van tank:

  • Spain vs French motorway: €58.10 difference
  • French off-motorway vs motorway: €42.70 difference

Over a return UK→Spain journey (4-5 fills):

  • Pay motorway prices: ~€700 total fuel
  • Use our method: ~€600 total fuel
  • Save: €100+ (£85+)

The Google Maps Method

How to Find Cheap Fuel (It's Stupidly Simple)

  1. Open Google Maps on your phone
  2. Search "station essence" (petrol station in French)
  3. Look at the station markers

Many stations now display their current fuel prices directly on Google Maps!

You'll see Gazole (diesel) and Sans Plomb 95/98 (petrol) prices updated within last 24-48 hours.

  4. Find stations 5-10 minutes off the motorway
  5. Target these supermarket chains:
    • E.Leclerc (usually cheapest - 5-10 cents below competitors)
    • Intermarché (close second)
    • Carrefour (reliable)
  6. Navigate to the cheap one and save €30-50 per fill

Best Supermarket Chains for Fuel

Where to Find the Cheapest French Fuel

Ranked from cheapest to most expensive:

1. E.Leclerc 🏆

  • Consistently 5-10 cents cheaper than competitors
  • Widespread across France
  • Often the absolute cheapest option
  • Look for big "E.Leclerc" signs off motorway exits

2. Intermarché

  • Close second to Leclerc
  • Good coverage in rural areas
  • Reliable competitive pricing

3. Carrefour

  • Reliable mid-range pricing
  • More common in cities
  • Good for last-minute fills

AVOID:

  • ❌ Motorway services (Total, Esso, BP on autoroutes) - 30-50% markup
  • ❌ City center branded stations - tourist tax
  • ❌ Tourist area stations - expensive

Strategic Fuel Planning

When and Where to Fill Up (The Master Plan)

Northbound (Spain → UK):

The Key Move: Fill up in Spain BEFORE entering France!

  1. Fill completely in Spain (€1.20-1.25/L)
    • This is the cheapest fuel you'll get
    • Full tank gets you 500-600km into France
  2. When you need to refill in France:
    • Use Google Maps method
    • Target Leclerc/Intermarché
    • Around Tours or Paris area
    • Avoid motorway services
  3. Fill again in UK (after Eurotunnel)
    • UK prices similar to French supermarkets
    • But more expensive than Spain

Why this works: Spanish fuel is 40% cheaper than French motorway. Starting with a full Spanish tank saves massive money.

Southbound (UK → Spain):

  1. Fill in UK before Eurotunnel

    UK prices: ~£1.40/L (€1.60/L)

  2. First French refill: Near Tours
    • About 400km from Calais
    • Use Google Maps method
    • Leclerc/Intermarché
  3. Second refill: Near Angoulême/Bordeaux area
    • Another 350km south
    • Again: cheap supermarket station
  4. Cross into Spain and fill IMMEDIATELY
    • Spanish prices drop 30-40%!
    • €1.20-1.25/L
    • Massive relief after French prices

The Numbers:

If you ONLY use motorway services (France):

4 fills × 70L × €2.05 = €574

Using our strategic method:

  • Spain fill: €1.22 × 70L = €85
  • French cheap: €1.45 × 70L × 2 = €203
  • UK fill: £1.40 × 60L = £84 (€97)
  • Total: €385

Savings: €189 (£162) over return journey!

⛽ SAVE €80-100 ON FUEL

Pro Tips

Advanced Fuel-Saving Strategies

Tip 1: Fill completely when prices are good

Don't just put in €50. Fill the tank completely. Maximize savings per detour.

Tip 2: Don't let tank go below quarter-full

Gives you flexibility to wait for a cheap station. Avoid desperation fills at expensive services.

Tip 3: Combine with other stops

Need food? Toilet? Coffee? Do it all at the supermarket fuel stop instead of paying separately at motorway services.

Tip 4: Evening fills are quieter

6-7pm = supermarket fuel stations less busy. Faster in and out.

Tip 5: Check prices BEFORE entering station

French law requires prices displayed at entrance. If expensive, just drive on.

Tip 6: Spanish border strategy

If heading to Spain: Don't fill up in France right before border. Wait 30 minutes, cross border, fill in Spain (40% cheaper!).

CONCLUSION

The Google Maps fuel price trick is stupidly simple, but most UK drivers don't know about it.

10-15 minutes per fill = €30-50 saved
Over a UK→Spain return journey: €80-100+ saved

With French motorway fuel hitting €2+ per litre, this isn't just a nice-to-have optimization. It's a significant cost reduction.

Your Action Plan:

  • ✓ Download Google Maps (you probably have it)
  • ✓ Search "station essence" along your route
  • ✓ Target Leclerc and Intermarché supermarkets
  • ✓ Add 10-15 minutes per fill-up
  • ✓ Save €30-50 per tank
  • ✓ Feel smug watching people pay €2.05/L at motorway
